My rebuttal to Avijit Roy's "Does Quran have any Scientific miracles?" article:

First of all, we have to get something cleared up.  No one ever claimed that the Noble Quran is a science book.  The scientific miracles that exist in the Noble Quran, which had been discovered only recently (in the past 100+ years) are a plus, because they are Allah Almighty's way to communicate with the people of today - that many things that we discover were already foretold in the Noble Quran.  But the Noble Quran itself is not a science book.  We don't solve mathematics using the Noble Quran.

Objection 1: If it was indeed the case that scriptures contain scientific facts and principles then we wouldn't need popular science books to explain scientific facts to common people. Instead the verses of the scriptures which are claimed to represent scientific facts and principles could be compiled and published as an "introduction to science". There is no doubt   that if those vague verses are indeed compiled and edited (omitting God or prophets and other holy references) and then published as a  science book , these books will not even be published, even if it is, no one will buy it. It is a sure failure, that's why it has never been attempted by the apologists. These verses cannot stand on their own merit as anything close to even a popular exposition of scientific facts and principles, let alone as accurate scientific statements.

My response:

As I mentioned above, the Noble Quran is not a science book.   The scientific miracles that exist in the Noble Quran, which had been discovered only recently (in the past 100+ years) are a plus, because they are Allah Almighty's way to communicate with the people of today - that many things that we discover were already foretold in the Noble Quran.  But the Noble Quran itself is not a science book.   We don't solve mathematics using the Noble Quran.

Objection 2: If Quran is a book of science, then what branch of science is this? Physics ? Chemistry ? Biology ? Social science? Library science? Political science? No answer.  [1]  Mullahs can only  give the answer in the line of technological/medical science relating blurry wordings of the book with practical examples of embryology, astronomy, Big-Bang, etc. Moreover, if one considers Quran as a super-scientific book then, they should be able to show us us at least one scientific principle that is disclosed in Qur'an without using any mumbo jumbo words and hocus pocus  boring tricks of difficulty with confusing translation of Qur'an. They should be able to tell us  where in the Qur'an one can find the laws of gravitation, laws of planetary rotation, principle of atomic structure of matters, the periodic table of elements, theory of relativity, geological science and which chapter of Quran deals with the modern science of aerodynamics, genetics engineering and inter-planetary travel, and elucidation of genetic code etc [2]. We find no meaningful direction. Moreover, If a perfect book written by a perfect God having intention to reveal a scientific idea, it should not have been so vague and metaphoric, but accurate and scientific enough that it can be put in a physics /chemistry/biology textbook without the need of any change. Not a single verse in the Holy Books contain even one scientific term, like atom, electron, cloning, Theory of relativity, Uncertainty principle etc. A "perfect" book cannot be lacking in precision so much [3].

As to categorizing the Noble Quran, it includes all sciences.   Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran explained how He created several of His creations, such as the Earth, the Universe, the Human Body, etc....  Let us look at the following examples:

My response:

Allah Almighty gave us headlines in the Noble Quran.  He did not intend for it to be a scientific Book.  It is through these headlines that He communicates to the advanced Mankind of today.  As I mentioned above, these Scientific Miracles that exist in the Noble Quran had only been discovered and talked about in the past 100 years of so.  Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him came 1500 years ago.

1. Qur'an foretells about Big bang.

Moreover, . Big Bang in Physics refers to the explosion of SPACE-TIME SINGULARITY (not matter). Matter was not even created when Big Bang happened. Earth was formed billions of years after the Big Bang. The above verses are clearly referring to earth and sky being "joined" (Which doesn't even have a common sense or scientific meaning) together and then being split apart (Again no scientific or common sense meaning), forget about comparing it to Big Bang!

If there is no answer of those scientific enquiries, how can one make himself convince  that those verses actually describing big bang, not the partition of an egg before making an omelet ?

My response:

[ADH-DHARIYAT 51:48]  And the earth, We have made it a wide extent; how well have We then spread (it) out.

 

Mullahs try to relate the above mentioned ayat with expanding universe. But there is no mention of "universe" at all in this verse. This verse here is only talking about earth. "Spreading the earth out " does not correlate with  any expansion of universe by any means, rather it establishes century old incorrect Quranic flat earth theory [6]. 

The cause of the expansion of the universe is scientifically known from Modern High Energy Astrophysics, known as the theory of inflation. The theory is guided by Einstein's mathematical theory of general relativity about the physical universe.  These are all characterized, at ANY instant in cosmological history, by mathematically- infinite space-like surfaces ( 3-d space in other words). In this (open) model of the universe, everything is expanding in the same sense that the points on a balloon's surface move away from all other points as the balloon is inflated. General Relativity says that for infinite universes, the same kind of expansion occurs. Inflationary cosmology adds to this by saying that we live in a small pocket of some vaster space-time. This pocked emerged from a tiny patch in the primordial space-time and inflated to a vast size.

From the above analysis it is clear that nothing in those Qur'anic verses come any close to what an expansion of universe really means. Those who wants to relate the verse with expansion of universe, is just their wishful interpretation.

You have purposely presented the wrong Noble Verse!  You have purposely failed to post the Noble Verse that precedes the one you presented!   We wonder why, since you claim to be truthful and sincere?!

The Expansion of the Universe

In the Qur'an, which was revealed 14 centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described like this:

"And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it."
(The Qur'an, 51:47)

The word "heaven", as stated in this verse, is used in various places in the Qur'an with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning. In other words, in the Qur'an it is revealed that the universe "expands". And this is the very conclusion that science has reached today.

Georges Lemaitre

Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that "the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time". The research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology, however, have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning, and that it constantly "expands".

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding.

This fact was proved also by observational data in 1929. While observing the sky with a telescope, Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. A universe where everything constantly moves away from everything else implied a constantly expanding universe. The observations carried out in the following years verified that the universe is constantly expanding. This fact was explained in the Qur'an when that was still unknown to anyone. This is because the Qur'an is the word of God, the Creator, and the Ruler of the entire universe.

From the moment of the big bang, the universe has been constantly expanding at a great speed. Scientists compare the expanding universe to the surface of a balloon that is inflated.

Allah Almighty never gave any number for the Universe's age.  Muslims do not believe that humans for instance existed only 5,000 years ago and will die in year 2000 or 2059 as many Christians believe. 

Allah Almighty was very accurate in His claims in the Noble Quran.  For instance, science proved that the metal "iron" was not created from earthly material or reactions.  Iron was sent by burning stars traveling through space that had collided with earth!  When those stars collided with earth and their melted metals cooled down and changed from liquid burned/melted metals to hard solid metals, they formed the metal of what we call today iron.

Let us look at Noble Verse 57:25 "We sent aforetime Our messengers with clear signs and sent down them the Book and the Balance (of right and wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down iron, in which is (material for) Mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, unseen, Him and His messengers: For Allah is Full of strength, exalted in Might (And able to enforce His Will)."

3. Qur'an mentions that the universe originated from a 'gaseous material'.

[FUSSILAT 41:11] Then turned He to the heaven when it was smoke, and said unto it and unto the earth: Come both of you, willingly or loth. They said: We come, obedient.

Muslim fundamentalists, by pointing out the above verse, claim  that Qur'an miraculously foretells that origin of universe began with the gaseous mater. They try to confuse the common people that it is the great and surest sign that the Qur'an is a book of God.   Let's examine their claim critically. 

First of all, The universe did not begin as a gas or any gaseous material. From current Big Bang theory we know, the universe began before any matter of any kind existed--it began as pure energy. It took several moments for any matter to form, and then it was a plasma, not a gas. Gases only came later, after the plasma cooled, and yet gasses were still not the only constituent--much of the mass-energy at even that point, as before, was comprised of electromagnetic radiation--light. The fact that the Quran fails to mention any of this or any other crucial scientific information is precisely why its claim to "scientific accuracy" is to be dismissed. It is making vague metaphysical statements, and that is not science [7]

My response:

Care to present a quote to support you claim?  You have already proved above that you are (perhaps) a decieving person Mr. Roy.  Here is few quotes for you that disproves your unsupported claim:

I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case.”"

Any response Mr. Roy?

Secondly, Even, for the shake of arguments, if we take "gaseous material" as plasma, then also the problem remains unsolved. The main problem is that the above-mentioned verse actually does not say about any  "gaseous material," which mullahs are continuously claiming.  The Arabic word used in this verse  is dukhan, -   "smoke."  [7]  Trying to relate smoke with gaseous material is nothing but a hide and seek wordy games played by Mullahs. Moreover, Smoke is made of ash, predominantly carbon, and is produced from burning (oxidation), not plasma condensation. Smoke looks nothing like heated hydrogen or helium, does not share its elemental mass or other properties, and does not even possess many of the general properties of a gas. Thus, Allah chose the wrong word. He could have used "hot gases" or "hot gases expanding in a vacuum" or anything which is more closer to the truth.  If we critically examine this verse, it becomes very clear to us that this verse is far from being scientific to define initial condition of the universe, that verse is really hoax.

My response:

Allah Almighty as I said above gave headlines for science in the Noble Quran.  The Noble Quran is not a scientific book!  However, it is fascinating that a bedioun who lived in the desert 1500 years ago could come up with such a claim that had been scientifically proven to be Truthful.

As Dr. Alfred Kroner, one of the world's renowned geologists, said: "Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case."

Thirdly, Let's check the chronological order of the above verse from Quran. 

From Verse 41:9 we find that that the earth is made "in two days," and this is the first two days in the list. After the creation of earth, Allah  describes the next two days of creation, completing the first "four days equal," in which mountains and plants are made in Verse 41:10. Thus, we find a gradual order of Qur'anic creation ie. Allah first created the earth and then filled the earth with mountains and plants (It is quite understandable that mountains and plants could not be made before the earth was made, thus 41:10 follows 41:9 in a quite reasonable order).  But then we see that verse 41:11 establishes an undeniable context in which the universe exists as smoke at the same time that the earth already exists, since God "rose over towards the heaven when it was smoke" and spoke to it and to the earth, therefore no Muslim can rationally deny that this verse clearly says the earth existed at the same time as the smoke which is totally irrational and absurd.

Thus the verse mentioned above which is claimed to be a "perfect analogy" describing the initial condition of the universe is nothing but a clever deception. 

My response:

First of all, it is important to know that the Days of Allah Almighty are different from our days.  One day for Allah Almighty is equal to 1,000 years of ours:

"Yet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But God will not fail in His Promise. Verily a Day in the sight of thy Lord is like a thousand years of your reckoning.  (The Noble Quran, 22:47)"

Second of all, Allah Almighty created the earth as one ball of water.  He later shaped it and reshaped it, and created the mountains, animals and life in it.  This is all discussed and proved at:

The article is too lengthy to paste it here, but I have provided ample evidence from the Noble Quran and SCIENCE that again and again, proved the Noble Quran's accurate claims to be Truthful.

He wrote:

4. Qur'an reveals Embryological facts !

[AL-MUMENOON 23: 12-14] Verily We created man from a product of wet earth; Then placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging; Then fashioned We the drop a clot, then fashioned We the clot a little lump, then fashioned We the little lump bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!

Some mullahs find the embryological facts in above verse. But if we check the verse from a rational point of view, it appears to us with a  different meaning. Let's check the above verse critically. First line is totally wrong. Man is not a product of any wet earth. Moreover, Quran ambiguously asserts many common sensually meaningless statement about such an elementary matter. For examples sometimes it tells that we are created from earth (11:61), sometimes it claims from from dry clay (15:26,28,33, 17:61, 32:7), sometimes "from nothing" (19:67), sometimes  "NOT from nothing" (52:35), sometimes from wet earth (23:12), or from mire (38:71), sometimes from water (25:54, 21:30, 24:45), sometimes from dust ( 3:59, 30:20, 35:11) or even sometimes from dead (30:19, 39:6). So which one is true ? Those contradictory ambiguous statements  actually do not reveal any scientific facts regarding either how we created or  what exactly we are made of.

Before analyzing rest of the portion of the above verse, we should give a useful information to the readers.  In 1982 Keith Moore, an anatomy professor at the University of Toronto, produced a (in)famous textbook titled "The Developing Human, 3rd edition". In this book Moore states his astonishment at the way embryonic development is depicted in the Qur'an. Moore took Yusuf Ali's  Translation  of the above verse [8]:

[Quran 23:13-14] We placed him as sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed; Then We made the sperm into a clot of blood; then of that blood clot We made a lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be God, the best to create!

Many people may amaze by the mention of sperm in this verse. But close observation reveals that there is nothing supernatural in it. Since the beginning of time man has been quite aware of the "seed" that is released from the penis during sexual intercourse. The old Hindu scriptures or   Bible, which are much older than the Qur'an, also have such indication. Aristotle clearly described about formation of a child inside the womb early 1,000 years before the Qur'an was written. No body claiming for any miracles for it. In fact Aristotle correctly described the function of the umbilical cord, something not mentioned in the Qur'an, showing that earlier philosophers were aware of such things mentioned by Muhammad and more [8]. 

Actually Qur'an contains erroneous ancient theories developed by Roman and Greek philosophers  about  human development . Let us consider the following verse referring to sperm:

He is created from a drop (of sperm) emitted-- Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs. (Qur'an 86:6-7)

Clearly this verse is incorrect, and clearly it has origins in earlier theories. First of all, for sperm to originate between the back and the ribs would mean that it comes from the kidneys! Greek physician Hippocrates theorized this wrong idea long before Muhammad, that sperm passed through the kidneys into the penis. For centuries this was an accepted (and incorrect) belief of the origins of sperm. The same erroneous concept we also find in Qur'an.

Let us again consider another verse from Quran. 

We create man from a drop of thickened fluid (76:2 Pickthall trans.)

The Arabic word used in this verse is   nutfah which describes  the fluid gushes out during sexual intercourse. Prof. Moore cleverly interpreted nutfah in sura 76:2 as "mingled fluid" and explains that this Arabic term refers to the male and female fluids which contain the gametes (male sperm and female egg). But fact is - the Qur'an emphatically does not mention sperm or eggs; it simply says nutfah (germinal fluid). All those embryological terms with sperm and eggs are the imaginative invention of Dr. Moore. 

Finally, again we want to touch back on the verses that spoke of the development of an unborn child again.  The Qur'an stated that the blood clot was turned to bone and then God "clothed the bones with flesh" (Quran 23:13-14). It is scientifically wrong. The fact is, in development process living tissue forms first, and then bones grow at a later time, and it continues   to gain strength  for many years after birth. But by expressing "blood clot was turned to bone" Quran reveals its one of many scientific inaccuracies.

EMBRYOLOGY

MAN IS CREATED FROM ALAQ---A LEECH-LIKE SUBSTANCE

A few years ago a group of Arabs collected all information concerning embryology from the QUR'AN, and followed the instruction of the QUR'AN:

"If ye realise this not, ask Of those who possess the Message."

All the information from the QUR'AN so gathered, was translated into English and presented to Prof. (Dr.) Keith Moore, who was the Professor of Embryology and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Toronto, in Canada. At present he is one of the highest authorities in the field of Embryology. He was asked to give his opinion regarding the information present in the QUR'AN concerning the field of embryology. After carefully examining the translation of the Qur'anic verses presented to him, Dr. Moore said that most of the information concerning embryology mentioned in the QUR'AN is in perfect conformity with modern discoveries in the field of embryology and does not conflict with them in any way. He added that there were however a few verses, on whose scientific accuracy he could not comment. He could not say whether the statements were true or false, since he himself was not aware of the information contained therein. There was also mention of this information in modern writings and studies on embryology. One such verse is:

"Proclaim! (or Read!) In the name Of thy Lord and Cherisher, WHO created---Created man, out of A (mere) clot Of congealed blood."

The word 'alaq' besides meaning a congealed clot of blood also means something that clings, a leech-like substance. Dr. Keith Moore had no knowledge whether an embryo in the initial stages appears like a leech. To check this out he studied the initial stage of the embryo under a very powerful microscope in his laboratory and compared what he observed with a diagram of a leech and he was astonished at the striking resemblance between the two! In the same manner, he acquired more information on embryology, that was hitherto not known to him, from the QUR'AN.

Dr. Keith Moore answered about eighty questions dealing with embryological data mentioned in the QUR'AN and HADITH. Noting that the information contained in the QUR'AN and HADITH was in full agreement with the latest discoveries in the field of embryology, Prof. Moore said, "If I was asked these questions thirty years ago, I would not have been able to answer half of them for lack of scientific information."

Dr. Keith Moore had earlier authored the book, 'The Developing Human'.After acquiring new knowledge from the QUR'AN, he wrote, in 1982, the 3rd edition of the same book, 'The Developing Human'. The book was the recipient of an award for the best medical book written by a single author. This book has been translated into several major languages of the world and is used as a textbook of embryology in the first year of medical studies. In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Moore said, "It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the QUR'AN about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- from GOD or ALLAH, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- must have been a messenger of GOD or ALLAH{The reference for this statement is the video tape titled 'This is the Truth'.For a copy of this video tape contact the Islamic Research Foundation}.

Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, U.S.A., proclaims: "... these HADITHS, sayings of MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available at the time of the writer (7th century). It follows that not only is there no conflict between genetics and religion (ISLAM) but in fact religion (ISLAM) may guide science by adding revelation to some of the traditional scientific approaches... there exist statements in the QUR'AN shown centuries later to be valid which support knowledge in the QUR'AN having been derived from GOD."

MAN CREATED FROM A DROP EMITTED FROM BETWEEN THE BACKBONE AND THE RIBS

"Now let man but think From what he is created! He is created from A drop emitted --- Proceeding from between The back bone and the ribs."

In embryonic stages, the reproductive organs of the male and female, i.e. the testicles and the ovaries, begin their development near the kidney between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Later they descend; the female gonads(ovaries) stop in the pelvis while the male gonads(testicles) continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the inguinal canal. Even in the adult after the descent of the reproductive organ, these organs receive their nerve supply and blood supply from the Abdominal Aorta, which is in the area between the back bone(spinal column) and the ribs. Even the lymphatic drainage and the venous return goes to the same area.

HUMAN BEINGS CREATED FROM NUTFAH (Minute Quantity of Liquid)

The Glorious QUR'AN mentions no less than eleven times that the human being is created from 'nutfah', which means a minute quantity of liquid or a trickle of liquid which remains after emptying a cup. This is mentioned in several verses of the QUR'AN including 22:5 and 23:13. {The same is also mentioned in the QUR'AN in 16:4, 18:37, 35:11, 36:77, 40:67, 53:46, 75:37, 76:2 and 80:19} Science has confirmed in recent times that only one out of an average of three million sperms is required for fertilising the ovum. This means that only a 1/three millionth part or 0.00003% of the quantity of sperms that are emitted is required for fertilisation.

HUMAN BEINGS CREATED FROM SULALAH (quintessence of liquid)

"And made his progeny From a quintessence Of the nature of A fluid despised."

                                                                                               [AL-QUR'AN 32:8]

The Arabic word 'sulalah' means quintessence or the best part of a whole. We have come to know now that only one single spermatozoan that penetrates the ovum is required for fertilization, out of the several millions produced by man. That one spermatozoan out of several millions, is referred to in the QUR'AN as 'sulalah'. 'Sulalah' also means gentle extraction from a fluid.The fluid refers to both male and female germinal fluids containing gametes. Both ovum and sperm are gently extracted from their environments in the process of fertilization.

MAN CREATED FROM NUTFATUN AMSHAAJ (Mingled liquids)

Consider the following Qur'anic verse:

"Verily WE created Man from a drop Of mingled sperm."

                                                                                               [AL-QUR'AN 76:2]

The Arabic word 'nutfatun amshaajin' means mingled liquids. According to some commentators of the QUR'AN, mingled liquids refers to the male or female agents or liquids. After mixture of male and female gamete, the zygote still remains 'nutfah'. Mingled liquids can also refer to spermatic fluid that is formed of various secretions that come from various glands. Therefore 'nutfatun amshaaj', i.e. a minute quantity of mingled fluids refers to the male and female gametes (germinal fluids or cells) and part of the surrounding fluids.

SEX DETERMINATION

The sex of a foetus is determined by the nature of the sperm and not the ovum. The sex of the chil, whether female or male, depends on whether the 23rd pair of chromosomes is XX or XY respectively. Primarily sex determination occurs at fertilization and depends upon the type of sex chromosome in the sperm that fertilizes an ovum. If it is an 'X' bearing sperm that fertilizes the ovum, the foetus is a female and if it is a 'Y' bearing sperm then the foetus is a male.

"That HE did create In pairs---male and female, From a seed when lodged (In its place)."

                                                                                        [AL-QUR'AN 53:45-46]

The Arabic word 'nutfah' means a minute quantity of liquid and 'tumna' means ejaculated or planted. Therefore 'nutfah' specifically refers to sperm because it is ejaculated.

The QUR'AN says:

"Was he not a drop Of sperm emitted (In lowly form)? Then did he become A clinging clot; Then did (ALLAH) make And fashion (him) In due proportion. And of him HE made Two sexes, male And female."

Here again it is mentioned that a small quantity (drop) of sperm (indicated by the word 'nutfatan min maniyyin) which comes from the man is responsible for the sex of the foetus. Mothers-in-law in the Indian subcontinent, by and large prefer having male grandchildren and often blame their daughters-in-law if the child is not of the desired sex. If only they knew that the determining factor is the nature of the male sperm and not the female ovum! If they were to blame anybody, they should blame their sons and not their daughters-in-law since both the QUR'AN and Science hold that it is the male fluid that is responsible for the sex of the child!

FOETUS PROTECTED BY THREE VEILS OF DARKNESS

"HE makes you, In the wombs of your mothers, In stages, one after another, In three veils of darkness."

                                                                                               [AL-QUR'AN 39:6]

According to Prof. Keith Moore these three veils of darkness in the QUR'AN refer to"
(a) anterior abdominal wall of the mother
(b)the uterine wall                                                                                                (c)the amnio-chorionoic membrane.

EMBRYONIC STAGES

"Man WE did create From a quintessence (of clay); Then WE placed him As ( a drop of) sperm In a place of rest, firmly fixed; Then WE made the sperm Into a clot of congealed blood; Then of that clot WE made A (foetus) lump; then WE Made out of that lump Bones and clothed the bones With flesh; then WE developed Out of it another creature. So blessed be ALLAH, The Best to create!"

                                                                                        [AL-QUR'AN 23:12-14]

In this verse ALLAH states that man is created from a small quantity of liquid which is placed in a place of rest, firmly fixed(well established or lodged) for which the Arabic word 'qararin makin' is used. The uterus is well protected from the posterior by the spinal column supported firmly by the back muscles. The embryo is further protected by the amniotic sac containing the amniotic fluid. Thus the foetus has a well protected dwelling place. This small quantity of fluid is made into 'alaqah', meaning something which clings. It also means a leech-like substance. Both descriptions are scientifically acceptable as in the very early stages the foetus clings to the wall and also appears to resemble the leech in shape. It also behaves like a leech(blood sucker) and acquires its blood supply from the mother through the placenta. The third meaning of the word 'alaqah' is a blood clot. During this 'alaqah' stage, which spans the third and fourth week of pregnancy, the blood clots within closed vessels. Hence, the embryo acquires the appearance of a blood clot in addition to acquiring the appearance of a leech. In 1677, Hamm and Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells(spermatozoa) using a microscope. They thought that a sperm cell contained a miniature human being which grew in the uterus to form a newborn. This was known as the perforation theory. When scientists discovered that the ovum was bigger than the sperm, it was thought by De Graf and others that the foetus existed in a miniature form in the ovum. Later, in the 18th century Maupertuis propagated the theory of biparental inheritence. The 'alaqah' is transformed into 'mudghah' which means 'something that is chewed(having teeth marks)' and also something that is tacky and small which can be put in the mouth like gum. Both these explanations are scientifically correct. Prof. Keith Moore took a piece of plaster seal and made it into the size and shape of the early stage of foetus and chewed it between the teeth to make it into a 'Mudgha'. He compared this with the photographs of the early stage of foetus. The teeth marks resembled the 'somites' which is the early formation of the spinal column. This 'mudghah' is transformed into bones (izam). The bones are clothed with intact flesh or muscles (lahm). Then ALLAH makes it into another creature.
Prof. Marshall Johnson is one of the leading scientists in US, and is the head of the Department of Anatomy and Director of the Daniel Institute at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in US. He was asked to comment on the verses of the QUR'AN dealing with embryology. He said that the verses of the QUR'AN describing the embryological stages cannot be a coincidence. He said it was probable that MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- had a powerful microscope. On being reminded that the QUR'AN was revealed 1400 years ago, and microscopes were invented centuries after the time of PROPHET MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam---, Prof. Johnson laughed and admitted that the first microscope invented could not magnify more than 10 times and could not show a clear picture. Later he said: "I see nothing here in conflict with the concept that Divine intervention was involved when MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- recited the QUR'AN."

According to Dr. Keith Moore, the modern classification of embryonic development stages which is adopted throughout the world, is not easily comprehensible, since it identifies stages on a numerical basis i.e. stage 1, stage 2, etc. The divisions revealed in the QUR'AN are based on distinct and easily identifiable forms or shapes, which the embryo passes through. These are based on different phases of prenatal development and provide elegant scientific descriptions that are comprehensible and practical. Similar embryological stages of human development have been described in the following verse:

"Was he not a drop Of sperm emitted (In lowly form)? Then did he become A clinging clot; Then did (ALLAH) make And fashion (him) In due proportion. And of him HE made Two sexes, male And female."

                                                                                        [AL-QUR'AN 75:37-39]

"HIM WHO created thee, Fashioned thee in due proportion, And gave thee a just bias; In whatever Form HE wills, Does HE put thee together."

                                                                                            [AL-QUR'AN 82:7-8]

EMBRYO PARTLY FORMED AND PARTLY UNFORMED

At the 'mugdhah' stage, if an incision is made in the embryo and the internal organ is dissected, it will be seen that most of them are formed while the others are not yet completely formed. According to Prof. Johnson, if we describe the embryo as a complete creation, then we are only describing that part which is already created.If we describe it as an incomplete creation, then we are only describing that part which is not yet created. So, is it a complete creation or an incomplete creation? There is no better description of this stage of embryogenesis than the Qur'anic description, 'partly formed and partly unformed', as in the following verse:

"WE created you Out of dust, then out of Sperm, then out of a leech-like Clot, then out of a morsel Of flesh, partly formed And partly unformed."

Scientifically we know that at this early stage of development there are some cells which are differentiated and there are some cells that are undifferentiated---some organs are formed and yet others unformed.

SENSE OF HEARING AND SIGHT

Thefirst sense to develop in a developing human embryo is hearing. The foetus can hear sounds after the 24th wek. Subsequently, the sense of sight is developed and by the 28th week, the retina becomes sensitive to light. Consider the following Qur'anic verses related to the development of the senses in the embryo:

"And HE gave You (the faculties of) hearing And sight and feeling (And understanding)."

                                                                                               [AL-QUR'AN 32:9]

"Verily WE created Man from a drop Of mingled sperm, In order to try him: So WE gave him (the gifts), Of Hearing and Sight."

                                                                                               [AL-QUR'AN 76:2]

"It is HE WHO has created For you (the faculties of) Hearing, sight, feeling And understanding: little thanks It is ye give!"

                                                                                             [AL-QUR'AN 23:78]

In all these verses the sense of hearing is mentioned before that of sight. Thus the Qur'anic description matches with the discoveries in modern embryology.

5. Qur'an reveals Earth is round !

This is nothing but a blatant lie. There is no sura in Quran that can claim for accuracy to  reveal that earth is round. The reality is totally opposite. Let's find some of those wonderful cosmological facts from Quran. In many places of "miaculous" Quran it alludes to the fact that earth is flat and mountains are like poles, which create a balance so that earth does not tilt. In chapter 88:17,20 it is recorded....

"Will they not regard the camels how they are created...... and earth how it spread?"

Even Muslim scholars things that In this phrase 'how it spread', he denotes that earth is flat. All the scholars of Islam agree upon this. It is NOT round as the physicists claim.

There are some other suras excerpted from Quran for the discerning readers to prove that Quran clearly supports the erroneous "flat earth" theory [9]:

God made earth like a carpet spread out…20:53
The earth is like a carpet spread out…43.10
Allah has spread out the earth…51:48
Allah made the earth a carpet…71:19
Allah made the earth as a wide expanse…78:6  etc.

Now let's check two prominent suras from Quran. In one sura Qur'an says that one of the righteous men of God's servants saw the Sun setting in a certain place of the Earth-in particular a well full of water and mud. There, this man found some people. Let us read what is recorded in the Qur'an (chapter "the Cave", verse 86):

"When he reached the setting place of the Sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring and found a people thereabout. We said: 'O Dhul-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness" [Al-Kahf (18:86)].

Again in another sura it is said -

Till, when he reached the rising-place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had appointed no shelter therefrom. [Al-Kahf (18:90)].

Any reader who have some common sense and preliminary knowledge of science, knows that sun does not need to have any "rising" or "setting" place, because, sun actually neither rise, nor does it set.  It is the diurnal motion of the earth which makes appear for sun's rising and setting. But alas ! It seems that our omniscient Allah does not know the simple scientific truth. Allah thought that Sun needs a definite rising and setting place for it. Such wrong idea that is revealed in Holy Quran eventually concludes that Allah considered that our earth is not round but flat.

After Maurice Bucaille's "Bible Quran and Science" had appeared in the market in 1976, it created a sensation among the Muslim community . A new trend is observed to relate  modern science   science with the so called holy books. Readers may get astonished to know how Western $cientists (yes! they are $cientists, not scientists)  are Bribed, Duped into Endorsing so called "Quranic" Science :

The most prominent  fundamentalist organization named Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh have undertaken some "wonderful" projects and philanthropic tasks of unfolding the scientific miracles hidden in Quran ! Hundreds of popular pseudo-scientific books have already been written in Bangla  to influence the common people of Bangladesh. Some of the popular and prestigious books that can be easily found in Nilkhet, Newmarket, Shahabag Aziz super market are - "Scientifc Indication of Holy Quran", "Al-Quran ek Moha Biggyan", "Mohakash o koraner challenge (part 1 and 2)", "Biigyan na Koran?", " Biggyan O Al-Quran" etc.  Many of those prestigious publications is already out of market because of its high demand and appreciation Nationally and sometimes Internationally. But what is actually written in those pseudo-scientific books ? Are they really dealing with science ? Dear Readers, have patience. Wait for my second part.

My response:

Before I present the PROOFS about the earth rotating around its axle in the Noble Quran, there are two Noble Verses that need to be addressed: 18:86, 18:90 and 20:130:

"Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: 'O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.'  (The Noble Quran, 18:86)"

"Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun.  (The Noble Quran, 18:90)"

I have proven with great details that Noble Verses 18:86 and 18:90 are Divine Figurative Speech, as there are MANY Divine Figurative Speeches in the Noble Quran.

In the mentioned article, I raised few questions that critics could not answer.  The following was taken from the same article www.answering-christianity.com/sunrise_sunset.htm:

There are several points and proofs to notice here:

1-  The sun had always risen from the east and set in the west in a constant circular motion.  To our human perspective, the sun had always rose from the east, and set in the west, and then goes under the earth to rise back from the east and so on.

2-  The sun could not physically set on a lake or Spring, because that area of water could not have space or hole under it where the sun would go through it to then go under the earth so it would rise back up again from the east.

3-  Not a single Muslim scholar interpreted this Noble Verse as the SUN SETTING INSIDE THE Mercy spring water.

4-  On the contrary in point #3, the Muslim scholars were the first to recognize earth as a spherical globe.

5-  If the verses were to be taken literally, then the sun would have to set in the west, and would have to then rise back from the west, and then set in the east and then rise back from the east and so on.

Did the sun ever rise from the west?

Did the sun ever bounce back and forth between the east and the west in its rising and setting?

6-  If we take the above Noble Verses LITERALLY, then this means that the sun would have to bounce back and forth between the west and the east.

7-  While the Noble Verses above don't give specific timing on how long it took Zul-Qarnayn to roam through the lands, but people back then were believed to be huge.  It was much easier for people to roam through the lands on foot than what we can do today.  This means that a person could walk through a great area of land before he/she tires out.

8-  Clearly, the setting of the sun, is a figurative speech indicating that he reached a town with a spring or lake in it, and he meditated through the beautiful view of the setting of the sun on that town.

9-  Some might say that the Noble Verse meant to say that the sun set on a place or through a hole near that Spring.  In this case, this interpretation had refuted their "Literal Speech" interpretation, because they now had NULLIFIED their point and fixed position about the sun setting exactly in that mercy lake or spring.  Since they now agree that it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that the sun literally set on the water, then the "setting through a hole near the water" claim is only and interpretation without clear cut certainty and proofs.

Having established point #9, we now can indisputably say that the Speech in the above Noble Verses is Figurative and not Literal.  Otherwise, we are left with the explanation of why the sun never rose from the west.  Not even once!

Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran talked in good details about the earth's past, present and future.  He explained how it was created, the stages it went through, and what will happen to it when the Day of Judgement comes.

The earth had gone through different stages and shapes since it was first created:

It is important to know that Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran claimed that the earth had gone through different stages and shapes:

1- The earth was originally water, and life was originated from water: 

"He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days - and His Throne was over the waters - that He might try you, which of you is best in conduct. But if thou wert to say to them, "Ye shall indeed be raised up after death", the Unbelievers would be sure to say, "This is nothing but obvious sorcery!"  (The Noble Quran, 11:7)"

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?  (The Noble Quran, 21:30)"

"It is He Who has created man from water: then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things).  (The Noble Quran, 25:54)"

2- Allah Almighty separated earth from the universe:

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?  (The Noble Quran, 21:30)"

This separation had caused the earth to totally change.  Allah Almighty was preparing earth to become livable.  All of its original characteristics had been changed.

3- The earth had gone through several shapings and formations to become livable:

The earth was split in fragments, stretched and flattened to become livable.   After land was created from water on earth, Allah Almighty further spread out the earth and created mountains, roads, rivers, vegetations and animals:

"And We split the earth in fragments,  (The Noble Quran, 80:26)"

"And when the earth is flattened out,  (The Noble Quran, 84:3)"

"And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.  (The Noble Quran, 15:19)"

The roundness of the earth in the Noble Quran:

Let us look at the following Noble Verse:

"30. And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);  31. He draweth out Therefrom its moisture And its pasture; 32. And the mountains Hath He firmly fixed -- 33. For use and convenience To you and your cattle.   (The Noble Quran, 79:30-33)"

I numbered the Noble Verses to make it easier for us to follow through the original Arabic text as follows:

"30. Wal-arda bada dhalika dahaha"
"31. Akhraja minha ma-aha wa maraaha"
"32. Wal-jibala arsaha"
"33. Mata-an lakum wa li an-aamikum"

There is a mistranslation:   In Noble Verse 79:30, the Arabic word "dahaha" doesn't mean extended (to a wide expanse).  The word literally mean formed in "round shape" or "egg shape" as clearly proven below in this article.  Also, In Noble Verse 79:31, "ma-aha" was translated as "moisture" as shown above.  "ma-aha" in Arabic literally means "its water".  The more accurate translation is: "He draweth out Therefrom its water And its pasture".

The reason why I pointed out the mistranslation about "ma-aha" is because (1) It is wrong; and (2) It is important to know that earth was originally water as shown in Noble Verse 11:7 above, and when Allah Almighty tells us that He draweth out water from earth, then this further proves that the earth had gone through different shapings and forms.

It appears from Noble Verses 79:30-33 above that Allah Almighty created land and life on earth at the time when He caused for the earth to become round; when Allah Almighty "daha" the earth or "dahaha", which means "daha" it.

The Arabic word "dahaha":

As we clearly saw above in the article, Allah Almighty caused for the earth to completely change in shape, form and characteristics several times until it became what we know of it today.  In fact, even when land was created on earth, it is believed by scientists (as I saw on TV) that during the time of the dinosaurs, our continents today were all joined together as one big piece of land or island surrounded by water from all directions.  If you look at the map of the earth today, you would see that they perfectly match each others.  The shape of the continents actually looks like they were all one piece of land that got divided up. 

Very Important Note:  My point from all of this is that it is quite possible that when Allah Almighty initially created land from the earth's water, the earth was flat, and the dinosaurs probably existed back then.  When Allah Almighty "daha" the earth and made it "round-shaped" or "egg-shaped", it is possible that the splitting of the continents as we have them today was done due to the rounding of the earth.

If you take any flat surface and bend it backwards to form a ball out of it, then you will easily notice that its surface will get stretched and anything written or painted on that surface will look stretched.  It is quite possible that the same happened to the earth and its contents when Allah Almighty "dahaha", or "daha" it.

The proof that "dahaha" means "egg-shaped":

Note: The commentators are well informed about the scientific conclusion that the earth is a globe, but the scientists are considered to be laymen in regard to understanding the meaning of the Qur'an. Because revelation has primacy over science, the Qur'an is the decisive basis for the commentators to insist that the earth is flat.

My response:

It is true that the word "sutihat" is from the root word "sataha" which usually means "to flatten".  As I proved above in the article, the earth had gone through shapings and formations.  It is quite possible that Allah Almighty in Noble Verses 88:17-20 was referring to the initial creation of the land where the earth was *possibly* flat.

It is also possible that Allah Almighty is telling us that the earth is both flattened and round at the same time.  This is not a contradiction.  To the normal human being, especially 1400 years ago, the earth was clearly flattened.  It wasn't too round with steep slopes.  No, it was and still is a flat livable surface for all creatures.  As I showed above in the article, Allah Almighty created land, mountains, roads, rivers, vegetations and animals all to exist on earth. 

So when Allah Almighty said that the earth "sutihat" in Noble Verses 88:17-20, it doesn't really prove that the earth is not round, because these Noble Verses are not the only ones talking about and describing the earth in the Noble Quran.

As the Tafseer Al-Jalalein says above: "At the earth how it is spread out(*) (Arabic: sutihat): meaning it was stretched..."   The stretching and the expanding of the earth to make it livable is what Allah Almighty referred to when He said the earth "sutihat".  

Let us look at an example of Allah Almighty claiming that He expanded the earth in the Noble Quran:

"And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o'er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!  (The Noble Quran, 13:3)" 

"spread out the earth" here in Arabic is "madda al-ard", which literally means "expand the earth" or "spread out the earth".

"He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels); and has sent down water from the sky." With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the others.  (The Noble Quran, 20:53)"

"made for you the earth like a carpet spread out" here in Arabic is "Ja-ala lakum Al-ard mahda".  "mahda" literally means a flat road, or a road that is easy to walk on.  It is similar to our highways today.   They are easy to drive on.

"And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.  (The Noble Quran, 15:19)"

"And the earth We have spread out" here in Arabic is "Wa Al-ard maddadnaha".  "maddadnaha" literally means "We expanded" or "We spread out".  It is derived from the root word "madda", which means "to stretch" or to "to expand" or "to spread out".

Again, let us consult Tafsir Al-Jalalein:

That is: "Basataha" as it was created before heaven without "Dahoo".

We see that Al-Jalalein us emphasizing the issue of "flattening". The interpreters are saying: "That is, He flattened it since it was not made flat before heaven was created."

Reading the context of this aya, Sura 79:27-33, the message of the Qur'an seems to be: Originally the earth was not flat (but somehow crumbled up?). After first creating the heaven over it (see 79:28-29), Allah flattened the earth (to make it inhabitable: ("A provision for you and for your cattle" 79:33).

My response:

Notice how the interpretation of the Noble Quran, Tafsir Al-Jalalein, says: "That is: 'Basataha' as it was created before heaven without 'Dahoo'. "  It is suggesting that Allah Almighty "basata" the earth (flattened it) before He "dahaha".

Very Important Note:  Notice in Noble Verse 79:30, Allah Almighty says in Arabic "bada dhalika", which literally means "after wards" or "after that" or "after the event finished", etc...  This clearly and unquestionably means that Allah Almighty "daha" the earth last.  The "Dahoo" of the earth came "bada dhalika" (after wards); after the earth "sutihat".

Again, please read the "The earth had gone through different stages and shapes since it was first created" section above to see the clear proofs from the Noble Quran that the earth had gone through several stages and formations.

Udhi'ya or Udhu'wa, are two names for the egg of the ostrich. The verb Da'ha (Ydahoo: present tense) is not derived from Udhi'ya or Udhu'wa, because names are derived from the "verb of origin" (fi'l al masdar), and the verb of origin is not derived from a name. The verb of origin is "dahawa" from which the verb "da'ha" and "yadhoo" are derived, and so is the name of the noun denoting the egg. The verb "da'aha" does not mean "kaw'wara" (made round) or made something in the shape of an egg, whether it is an ostrich egg or a chicken's egg. As a matter of fact, the verb "da'ha" means the complete opposite to the concept of the roundness. Here is what "Al-munjid fil'lugha wal'alam" has to say:

• "da'ha da'hwan ... God `da'ha' earth that is `basataha'."
     And that is exactly what Al-Jalalein has said.
• "da'ha idhiwa'an: `inbisatan'." (that is: flattening)
• "al-udh'y, al-idhi'y, al-udhu'wa, al-udhi'ya: The egg of the ostrich in the sand."

We must pay attention to what Al-Munjid is saying here: "The egg of the ostrich `in the sand'" and the following is the reason for this expression:

When the female ostrich fears a danger threatening her egg, she immediately digs into the sand to hide the egg, then "tadhoo" (flattens) the earth above it, so that it would not be seen by the vultures of the air who are always in search of such a delicacy for their next meal. Therefore, the word "al-udhu'wa" is used as a name of the ostrich egg since it is something (with the sand) flattened (over it). That is where the name came from. The Arabic dictionary never states that the verb "da'ha" means "made round" or "made in the shape of the egg of an ostrich".

My response:

The Christian "Answering Islam" team are now contradicting themselves and are beginning to show their signs of weakness and desperation.  Notice how at first they agree with the Tafsir Al-Jalalein interpretation by saying:

"Udhi'ya or Udhu'wa, are two names for the egg of the ostrich."

Udhiya and Udhuwa are not root words.  Udhiya is simply a singular of Dahyyaat.   Udhuwa is the same word as Udhiya.  Also, Deheya or Deheyya also means Udhiya.   In the Arabic grammar, depending on the position of the word in the sentence, we sometimes substitute the pronunciation of the "y" with a "w".  Udhiya and Udhuwa are not two different words.   They are the same word.  The Arabic word "dahaha" is derived from the root word "dahya" which literally means "egg".  Udhuwa is the reference to "dahya".  In Arabic, words that are referenced are sometimes written differently.  Udhuwa and "dahya" are written differently, but they mean the same word. 

A good example for this is "udhooka" and "duhka".   "duhka" means "a laugh".  If I say to someone "let me give you a laugh", I tell him "daani uteeka udhooka".   "udhooka" is the reference word for "duhka". 

Notice that I didn't write "daani uteeka duhka".  No, I wrote "daani uteeka udhooka".  Udhooka is the reference word for "duhka".  It is grammatically WRONG to not use "udhooka" in the proper Arabic grammar.

The same grammar principle applies to "dahya" and "Udhiya" or "Udhuwa" or "Deheya" or "Deheyya" reference words that they gave. 

As to "yadhoo" and not "Ydahoo" (as they mistakenly wrote it), it is completely irrelevant, because "yadhoo" is an action and not a definition.   It is the present tense of "dah", which is derived from the root word "dahya".

Important Note:  Notice how the word "egg" or "egg of the ostrich" in Arabic is close enough to the Noble Quran's "dahaha".  The Christian "Answering Islam" team are simply trying to divert the subject and deceive the reader in a desperate attempt to convince him that "dahya (egg)" is not related to the Noble Quran's "dahaha".

They shot themselves in the foot:

They said: "We must pay attention to what Al-Munjid is saying here: "The egg of the ostrich `in the sand'" and the following is the reason for this expression:

When the female ostrich fears a danger threatening her egg, she immediately digs into the sand to hide the egg, then "tadhoo" (flattens) the earth above it, so that it would not be seen by the vultures of the air who are always in search of such a delicacy for their next meal. I am glad that they linked the ostrich's egg with the hiding of the egg under flat sand.  This clearly proves that Allah Almighty has indeed used THE BEST ARABIC WORD to describe the whole situation of the earth:

1- The earth is round like the ostrich's egg.

2- The earth is flat like the flat sand covering the egg from predators.  Isn't the earth flat for us and round astronomically both at the same time?

Even though they purposely avoided the Arabic word "dahya" which means a single "egg" and instead went with awkward reference words like "al-udhu'wa" (as they wrote it) in a desperate attempt to prove that the Noble Quran's "dahaha" has nothing to do with an egg (dahya) and "al-udhu'wa".

Muslim Scientists during the 14 century (800 years after Islam) concluded that the earth is round and moving in space:

Noble Verse 96:6 actually says: "Nay, but man doth Transgress all bounds,"  You gave the wrong reference for the Noble Verse.  Anyway, all of the Noble Verses that deal with this issue of spreading out the earth and stretching it had been covered in the "The earth had gone through different stages and shapes since it was first created" section above.

My response:

Actually your ignorance is what's stopping you from comprehending and appreciating Islam.  "madadnaha" literally means "We stretched it out".   I don't know where exactly you're getting your nonsense from about the earth being flat.  I think you should look around you and see how flat the earth feels to you.   If you do that, then you'll appreciate what Allah Almighty is Saying in the Noble Quran.

If Muhammad or the author of the Qur'an really had known that the earth is round, and had wanted to mention this fact in the book, he could have used a more simple word in Arabic to put an end to this puzzling issue. We have no doubt that Muhammad was aware of the existence of other words in the Arabic language that can describe the shape of something round. In fact, we read in sura 81:1 (At'Takweer - meaning: Rounding!):

"Itha'sh-shamsu kuwirat": "When the sun is folded up."

My response:

It is important for you know that Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran didn't just speak to the Bedouin Arabs 1400 years ago in His Holy Revelation.  He spoke to all of Mankind for all times and all places.  Let me give you few examples:

1- Scientists proved that the universe is expanding.  Allah Almighty too said in the Noble Quran that He is expanding the Universe.

2- Allah Almighty spoke to the Computer Age today with His number 19 Miracle in the Noble Quran.

3- Allah Almighty spoke about how mountains prevent the earth from shaking.  Science proved today that mountains do prevent the earth from shaking while rotating around itself.

Anyway, to answer your question about why did Allah Almighty use the word "dahaha" in Noble Verse 79:30, well it's because the word is the most precise out of all.  It describes the roundness and the flatness of the earth at once.   Allah Almighty is talking to the astronomers and science in this Noble Verse.   As I showed above, Muslim scientists in the 14th century came to the conclusion that the earth is round and it is swimming in the space like the other planets.

As to the sun in Noble Verse 81:1, I suggest for you to take some Arabic courses, because "kuwwirat" means to fold up.  The Noble Verse is saying that the sun will be folded from outside to inside, where no light from it shall emerge again.   "Takweer" in Arabic also means "folding up".  You are obviously mixing up and confusing the modern slang Arabic word "Kura" which means "ball" to the Noble Quran's "kuwwirat" which existed long before 1400 years ago when the Noble Quran was revealed.

No where in the Noble Quran or the Sayings of Prophet Muhammad do we see any mention of the sun being flat.  Again, you badly mixed the modern word "kura" for ball with the very old Arabic words "kuwwirat" and "takweer" (thousands of years before 1400 years ago when the Noble Quran was revealed).  Your interpretation about the sun being flat in Islam is false.

As to "lufifat", it means to "wrap around", or to "wrap up".  Allah Almighty will not wrap Himself around the sun to turn off it's light.  This word would not be appropriate to use in the Noble Quran because it wouldn't be accurate.  Again, you made an error in your Arabic interpretations, grammar and vocabularies.

Noble verses 13:3, 20:53 and 15:19 in which God Almighty says that He has spread out the Earth could very well be referring to the spreading out of the continents.   Geologists and archaeologists believe that the Earth's land-masses were once a single land mass they call Pangea, the super-continent.  Over time, the land was stretched apart into different continents.

This gradual movement of tectonic plates is also the cause of many mountain ranges.   Is it any surprise that God mentions the mountains right after He mentions the "stretching" or "spreading out" of the land?

As for the "flattening" of the Earth, it should be noted that the fact that the Earth's diameter is longer at the equator than between the poles is caused by Earth's rotation (At least that appears to be conventional wisdom at this time).  If the Earth were to start spinning faster, it would theoretically get "flatter" or in other words, its ellipsoid properties would be more pronounced.

When God Almighty created the alternation between night and day, He basically caused the Earth to start rotating on its axis, which would have "flattened" the planet due to the centrifugal force.  The degree to which the Earth now appears "flattened" at the poles is barely noticeable.  However this does nothing to change the fact that at some point, when rotation was initiated, there was indeed a "flattening".  And this flattening (as well as the stretching mentioned above) both occurred AFTER the Earth was created.

Another possible interpretation of the earth's "flattening" is erosion, which has smoothed and flattened many of the early Earth's jagged and rugged features.

I base the above on nothing more than my own layman's understanding and some cursory research into the question.  Allah Almighty knows best.  The Truth is His alone, and my errors are my own.

The changes to earth on the Day of Judgement:

Let us look at what Allah Almighty said about the future of the earth in the Noble Quran:

"One day the earth will be changed to a different earth, and so will be the heavens, and (men) will be marshalled forth, before God, the One, the Irresistible;  (The Noble Quran, 14:48)"

"One Day We shall remove the mountains, and thou wilt see the earth as a level stretch, and We shall gather them, all together, nor shall We leave out any one of them.  (The Noble Quran, 18:47)"

"At it the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin,  (The Noble Quran, 19:90)"

"No just estimate have they made of God, such as is due to Him: On the Day of Judgment the whole of the earth will be but His handful, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand: Glory to Him! High is He above the Partners they attribute to Him!  (The Noble Quran, 39:67)"

It appears from the above Noble Verses that at the Day of Judgement, Allah Almighty will shake the entire earth, flatten it by crushing and flattening its mountains, open it to swallow up all of the creatures on it, and everything on earth will be in violent commotion.

Mr. Avijit Roy, Islam does not confict with the above statement.  The only difference between Islam and the other modern religions in this world is that Islam is against blind faith.  Have the Noble Quran only consisted of story narrations and history, as most of the Bible is, and contained no Miracles in it, then the above statement would go against Islam, because Islam then would require blind faith in order for it to be practiced.

Islam is very simple and requires no complications: Believe in the Absolute One and True GOD Almighty, and associate no partners with Him:

"Say: He is God, the One and Only; God, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him.  (The Noble Quran, 112:1-4)"

This is one of the many examples to show where  those morally degraded professors are taking our education system ! Those renowned Islamic scholars  have already discovered  Big-bang, cosmic egg, black hole, time dilation, Red star nebula, AIDS, cancer, embryology, biology, pathology -everything in their "holy" Quran. I wonder whether we really need any other specific scientific books to learn science more. Quran itself is enough !  Rest are all redundant and superfluous. "Al-Quran ek Moha-biggyan" (Quran is super-science) -these are not my words.   Those honest words are confessed in a book written by Momotaj Doulatana published from "Gyan-kosh Prokashoni" of Bangladesh. I don't know what other Muslims do, but whatever people do, this does not nullify the fact that the Noble Quran contains overwhelming Scientific Miracles in it that prove the Noble Quran's Divinity.

Again, As Dr. Alfred Kroner, one of the world's renowned geologists, said: "Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case."

If the reader reads the verse carefully, they will know that there is no "source of light" or "deflector" in that verse. It is simply said: the sun a shining brightness ( "splendor and glory of brightness") and the moon a light!!
 

From the ancient period people from their daily observation knew that the sun had strong and bright light and moon had cool light that illuminates and helps in the darkness of the night. In Bangla we  commonly say "Roudro-topto din" and "Chondalokito raat" in the same way in  English we use "Sunshine" and  "Moonlight". That mean that the ancient Bengali/Englishmen discover that the Sun is more shinning/bright/hot   than the moon. It is so simple fact an infant could notice. Here in the Quran verse the words [10] :

 

Sun shine

 

Moon light.
 

The next part of the verse for readers'  interest:
 

and the moon a light, and ordained for it mansions that you might know the computation of years and the reckoning.
 

This portion is not miraculous. The ancient Arabs  used sun and moon to measure time. The lunar months and lunar years are used by pastoral people. That's why Quran says this. Point to note that   the people in our modern days do not need to use the moon for measuring time that is strictly mentioned in Quran.

 

My response:

It is obvious that Allah Almighty did not use the same word for the light of the moon Vs. the light of the sun.  He used "noor" which literally means "bright light" for the moon, and "diyaa" which literally means "continueous light" or "turned on light" or "generated light" (as in turning on the electrical light switch) for the sun.  His use of two different words for the sun and the moon to people who thought that the moon and the sun each had it's own internal light stored in it proves that Allah Almighty did clearly make a distinction between the sun's and the moon's lights in the Noble Quran, and said

that they were different types of lights.

Again, the Noble Quran's accuracy in making "scientific" claims and distinctions was absolutely perfect!

Also, in Arabic, when one says "Diyaa Al-Noor", which literally can mean "the source of the light" as in "Idwee al-Noor" (turn on the electric light), this means that "Noor" is part of "Diyaa", and the vise versa is not true.

Note: Idwee, which means "turn on" or "switch on" is derived from the root word "Dawu", which means "source light".  "Diyaa" is also derived from "Dawu".

It's interesting that the two words, "Diyaa" and "Noor", used for the sun and the moon respectiveily were chosen to be used by Allah Almighty in Noble Verse 10:5.

The scientific Atomic  theory have nothing to do with this Quranic Atom. This atom is used in Quran to denote small particle. When Arabs tried to talk about small particle, they could not find a suitable word to describe the atom; only appropriate the word they imagined was "zarah" which mean: the dust particle, and the small ants [10]
 

If  Quran really talked scientifically about atom and molecules, then we should have some indication about electrons, protons neutrons. But there is no real indication of it in the whole Quran. If any scientist claim that Quran really talk about Atomic physics, then he must show us where we may get the scientific idea of Nuclear structure, how can one observe Rutherford scattering ? How can one acquire the knowledge of Static properties of nucleus such as angular momentum, parity, size shape, magnetic multiple moments, electric multiple moments etc. and  Dynamic properties such as nuclear reaction etc. Neither we can get any idea from Quran about Strong interaction model and weak interaction model, nor can we develop any well established model such as Fermi degenerate gas model, Alpha particle model, Liquid drop model, Shell model, Optical model, Collective model or compound nucleus model using Quranic principle.  Quran can only imagine very ambiguously small particle as dust and the small ants. While Islamic scientists try to prove Quran super-scientific, they usually try to get the words out from it context.

 

My response:

You are right to say that the the scientific atomic theory have nothing to do with this Noble Verse.  But however, pay close attention to what Allah Almighty said:

"And not an atom's weight in the earth or in the sky escapeth your Lord, nor what is less than that or greater than that, but it is (written) in a clear Book."

If the atom is the smallest thing Allah Almighty Had ever Created, then how could He say "nor what is less than that"?  Allah Almighty here in this Noble Verse did clearly state that the atom is not the smallest creation.  We certainly know today that the atom, which is made of "protons", "electrons" and "neutrons", is not the smallest thing.  It's charges that are inside of it are smaller than it, and GOD Almighty Knows if there are even smaller charges or entities than any of the atom's parts.

This is a blatant lie. Here is the original Quranic view about our solar system :

 

The picture, however,  is incomplete and missing some very vital "scientific" points. According to Quran our Earth is flat and to be more accurate the picture of the flat Earth must be much bigger and the Sun and the Moon are to be much smaller. They are “lamps” hanging from the ceiling of the sky that is being supported by invisible columns. The Quranic solar system also contains invisible genies. In Arabic "ARD" means the Earth and "FALAK" is rotation/movement. Can you show me any of the verses from the Qur'an that contains these two words one after another ?

I have accepted your challenge and disproved your points.  It is way too lengthy to paste here because I have given you ALL OF THE NOBLE VERSES that deal with the solar system, and a detailed explanation and analysis of the original Arabic version of those Noble Verses at:

Let me just give you one little sample of what I provided to you Mr. Roy:

"When you look at the mountains, you think that they are standing still. But they are moving, like the clouds. Such is the manufacture of GOD, who perfected everything. He is fully Cognizant of everything you do.   (The Noble Quran, 27:88)"

Why did Allah Almighty say in the Noble Quran that the mountains pass like the clouds in the sky do?  We all know that to humans, the earth doesn't really move.   Everything is standing still, except during the times of earth quakes.

So what is the purpose from Allah Almighty telling us that the mountains are moving?   By the way, the "mountains" here is not just limited to mountains, but rather it includes the whole ground we're standing on, since like I said, to us humans, the earth doesn't move, except during the times of earth quakes.  And the mountains are obviously connected with the ground.

By the way, clouds never really move away.  They only rotate around the earth and travel above the earth; above land to land.  So if the mountains (the whole ground of earth since the mountains are part of earth) are "moving, like the clouds", then this means that the earth is also moving in circle around its axle.

So, why didn't Allah Almighty just say so?  Allah Almighty 1500 years ago did not want to make irrational and CRAZY statements that would've been refused and considered as absurd and utter nonsense to the people who lacked a great deal of knowledge about astronomy and geology.  The Miracle of the Noble Quran is that while Allah Almighty made the statement in Noble Verse 27:88 acceptable to the people back then, He also included the scientific claim in it for us today, and told us that the earth does indeed move around its axle.

In fact, Allah Almighty specifically said that in the Noble Quran:

"And the earth We have spread out; set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.  (The Noble Quran, 15:19)"

"He created the heavens [sky] without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds.  we send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs.  (The Noble Quran, 31:10)"

"And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and rivers and roads; that ye may guide yourselves, and marks and signposts and by the stars (men) guide themselves.  (The Noble Quran, 16:15-16)"

The mountains, like pegs, have deep roots embedded in the ground.  (Anatomy of the Earth, Cailleux, p. 220)
Allah Almighty said: "Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?  (The Noble Quran, 78:6-7)"
He the Almighty also said: "And He has set firm mountains in the earth so it would not shake with you....(The Noble Quran, 16:15)"

So, why did Allah Almighty say in the Noble Quran 1500 years ago that the earth is moving like the clouds?

Because the earth was scientifically proven to rotate around its axle:

"The day is defined to be the time between one dawn (or noon) and the next' i.e., the day is defined with respect to the position of the Sun in the sky. Now, the earth revolves around the sun in the sky and so the time taken for the Sun to come to the same position in the sky is longer than the time taken for the Earth to rotate once around itself. You can convince yourself about this by drawing a picture of the Earth in orbit around the Sun and rotating around itself at the same time.

So, the Earth's rotation period is actually 4 minutes less than what we call as one day. As a result of this, the Sun's position in the sky at noon is roughly fixed, but the stars slowly drift apart. So, the stars which are overhead at midnight today will slowly move in the sky until they will be overhead at noon 6 months apart.

If instead we defined a day to be the time taken by the Earth to rotate round itself exactly once, then as you mention, the Sun will be overhead on some day at midnight."

Let's see how Dr. William Campbel refuted the Quranic science of  Bucaille :

Dr. Bucaille declares that until the late sixteenth century ``man held totally inaccurate views on the water cycle'', and considers that several statements in the Qur'an which reflect a knowledge of the water cycle could not therefore have come from any human source (!!!!!).

He quotes Suras 50:9-11, 35:9, 30:48, 7:57, 25:48-49, and 45:5, as verses which include steps (2), (3), and (4a). As an example we will look at the Late Meccan Sura of the Heights (Al-A`rúf) 7:57,

``(God) is the One Who sends forth the winds like heralds of His Mercy. When they have carried (2) the heavy-laden clouds, We drive them to a dead land. Then We cause (3) water to descend and thereby (4a) bring forth fruits of every kind. Thus We will bring forth the dead. Maybe you will remember.''

To demonstrate step (4b) he brings verses from Suras 23:18-19, 15:22, and the Late Meccan Sura of The Crowds (Al-Zumar) 39:21 which reads,

``Have you not seen that God sent water down from the sky and led it through (4b) sources into the ground? Then he caused sown fields of different colors to grow.''

These verses are accurate, of course, but the question is do they show special foreknowledge and thereby prove Divine Revelation? The answer must surely be "no''. Every man or woman, even those living in a city, could describe steps (2), (3), and (4a). And every person in contact with farmers during a drought will hear them say that their wells and springs have dried up, thus showing common knowledge of step (4b) that rain is the source and origin of underground water.

But what of step (1) - evaporation as the source of rain clouds? This would be much more difficult to understand by observation and it is obviously could not be known by ancient people when Quran is revealed. But Does Quran have any verse regarding this evaporation ? No. it is not mentioned in anywhere of the Quranic verses cited [11].

 

My response:

You are right, since the Noble Verse does not have foreknowledge information in it, while it remained perfectly accurate and Truthful, then there is no need to consider it as a Scientific Miracle.  However, it does include headlines to the water cycle.

Please keep in mind that not all of the Noble Verses in the Noble Quran are "scientific".  Some of them might just be about GOD Almighty telling us to ponder upon His Creation, and to see His Holiness and Mightiness, and that we in return have to be thankful to Him and keep our Prayers to Him.

10. Quran foretells about "Red star Nebula" :

 

(55:37-38) “And when the heaven splitteth asunder and becometh rosy like red hide.”  

This verse, unfortunately  has nothing to do with any Red Star Nebula. Actually in this verse Muhammad was just trying to scare people with tales of blazing fires and dreadful things. The above verse is another one of Prophet's scare mongering verses, when sky opens and becomes red (with fire) [12].

We all know that Cat's Eye Nebula is a galactic star far away.  It is red because it is going away from us. All stars are going away from us because the universe is expanding and therefore they are red. We cannot see it in our plain eyes; we only can see it through the most powerful telescopes [12].

Aparthib and I have already written a lots of article refuting such pseudo-scientific claim of relating vague verses of Quran with scientific inventions. I remember what Aparhib once wrote in one forum after one apologist claiming such vague "miracle":

I see an attempt here to link planetary nebulae with a religious verse. This is a flawed attempt that is often made by apologetics of all religions, some more than others. If one likes to see science in anything they can see it anywhere. Some Joe may have said "All is relative" before Einstein's theory of relativity. By this stretch of imagination that Joe can legitimately claim that he already knew about relativity and claim originality. Any vague phrase, pun, quote etc by humans, scriptures etc can be customized and made to fit any scientific principle which also have been phrased in a very general way for popular consumption hiding the underlying precise sense of these principles. Its an insult to science and the scientists whose painstaking research has helped unravel the complex workings of the laws of nature and reality. None of these scientific revelations were inspired from, dependent on, or utilized any of the religious revelations. If religious revelations could not and did not lead to any of these scientific truths in a stand alone way then by any criterion and logic they cannot be used to corroborate science. There are many unanswered questions in the basic understanding of the universe. Why can't the verses of scripture throw any light on them? For example we don't at this time know for sure if the universe is closed, open or flat. No body dares to make a prediction based on any revelation. But if it is ever found out by science I am sure one can dig out some vague words of a verse from some book of some religion and claim to "see" the answer that science has finally managed to find. Its always AFTER the fact that these semblances are found. It has never been found BEFORE the scientific discovery. Is that a coincidence?

Then Aparthib went on saying  -

Nobel laureate Physicist Dr. Abdus Salam warned against people trying to explain Big Bang using verses from Koran, saying that the current version of Big Bang is the best known scientific explanation for the creation of the universe. What if a better scientific explanation than Big Bang is found tomorrow? Should the verses be changed to accommodate the new scientific view? Religion can never vindicate or falsify science. The truth or falsity of a scientific principle lies within science itself. Religious scriptures cannot speak of any scientific principle. Religious revelations are absolute directives and narratives for humans to follow as faith unquestioningly. Many revelations clearly contradict many accepted scientific principles. No scientist of any repute have ever tried to substantiate scientific principles by religious beliefs. Most scientists and theologicians would rather not mix faith with objective and rational field of science. Koran/Bible/Gita etc are not books of science. Any coincidental vague semblance between a verse and a popular phrasing of a complex scientific principle is solely due to the very general and vague wordings admitting of any interpretation that one chooses to impose on it. All one needs is some vague reverse fitting argument to connect the two. One can find Quantum Mechanics in Tagore's poems, or relativity in the Buddhist Monk Nagarjun's writing. Just seeing what one likes to see because of a preset belief in a favoured belief system doesn't make it so by any objective criterion. My purpose is not to disrspect religion or its revelation, but to question the attempt to reconcile the two in an illogical way. They can be irreconcilable and yet can continue and thrive as separate ways as long as one does not get in the way of the pursuit of the other.

Scientists just recently discovered an exploded red galaxy.  Let us look at what Allah Almighty said in the Noble Quran from the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation:

"When the sky is rent asunder, and it becomes red like ointment.  (The Noble Quran, 55:37)"

Note: The Noble Verse in Arabic says: "Fa-itha inshaqqati alssamao fakanat wardatan kaalddihani"  "Wardatan" is derived from the root word "Warda", which literally means "rose" or "flower".

The following translations of the Noble Verse prove this clearly:

Pickthall:
"And when the heaven splitteth asunder and becometh rosy like red hide -"

Khalifa:
"When the sky disintegrates, and turns rose colored like paint."

Palmer:
"And when the heaven is rent asunder and become rosy red - (melting) like grease!"

Sale:
"And when the heaven shall be rent in sunder, and shall become [red as] a rose, [and shall melt] like ointment:"

Rodwell:
"When the Heaven shall be cleft asunder, and become rose red, like stained leather:"

Look at the accuracy of the description in Allah Almighty's Words and the confirmed reality:

Telescopes obviously did not exist 1500 years ago during the times of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.  It is amazing that the RED EXPLOSIONS of galaxies and the formation of the RED ROSES had been prophesied in the Noble Quran.  When anyone viewed the Universe 1500 years ago, he would either see it as pure blue during the day or pure black during the night.  Who could ever imagine that the Universe had galaxies in it and they do explode?

Allah Almighty in Noble Verse 55:37 is telling us that the Universe will all turn into red exploded galaxies looking like red or reddish roses when the Day of Judgement happens.
